TODO General Frequently Asked Questions

The range between each setting is quite wide, how do I know where to start?

The settings are wide to allow for different thicknesses of materials. It is advisable to start in the middle of the range, so you can adjust either way

My settings seem different to those shown on the settings guide table.

If you have tried a variety of settings and you are not achieving the desired results please contact our customer services team.

What weight of cardstock works well with TODO?

Around 180gsm to 240gsm works well and uncoated is fabulous!

Can I adjust the roller half way through a cut?

No, adjusting the settings under pressure can damage the TODO machine. You should take the roller back to the beginning before making any adjustments.

I’m having trouble adjusting the pressure dial, what should I do?

Ensure the TODO roller has been rolled to either end of the unit; the roller cannot be adjusted mid-way – especially if it is still under pressure. Note: The dial cannot be pushed down unless it is in line with either a whole or half number.

My cutting plates are starting to bend.

If you use your cutting plates one sided this can happen over time. To avoid this, and prolong the life of your plates, you should alternate sides with each use.

What type of materials can I cut on TODO?

Actually this is more to do with the dies you use rather than the machine, but as you can use Sizzix™ dies on TODO it can cut a wide range of materials.

Can I use any brand of dies with TODO?

We have tested most of the leading brands of dies with the machine and there were no issues. Some of the more intricate dies may require the use of the D plate.

I’m having difficulty achieving a good die cut with TODO?

Try to run the die through twice and also rotate it. You will feel by the pressure of the machine.

I’m having difficulty cutting intricate dies with TODO?

Have you tried cutting with the D plate? The D plate can replace the B plate in your cutting sandwich. This has a smaller surface area so the pressure is more focussed on the die itself.

Can I use a metal shim in the TODO?

Yes, some of the more complex dies may need additional shim; try placing a metal shim under the base plate in the well of the machine. Please note: the metal shim cannot be too thick so as to avoid damaging the electrical point.

Hot Foiling Frequently Asked Questions - Click to view answers

How long does the hot foil plate take to heat up?

About 12 minutes. When the hot foil plate reaches the correct temperature the light will change from red to green. If, for some reason, the machine fails to heat up/turns green quicker than expected, please contact our customer services team.

I’m having difficulty achieving a good hot foil finish with TODO?

Put the selected hot foil stamp onto the hot plate to warm up; this will ensure the heat has distributed through your chosen stamp. Run the TODO roller over the hot foil sandwich – take your time to allow the foil to adhere properly to your media.

How long does the hot foil plate take to cool down?

Approximately 30 minutes.

Can I remove the base platform while it is still hot?

Absolutely. Just remember that it will be hot, so be careful.

Which way up do I use the foils?

Always colour side down.

How can I use the negative pattern left behind on the foil?

Turn one of the larger hot foil stamps so the pattern is facing down and lay the foil on to this. Then place card over the top and run the TODO roller over the plate. You may get some hot spots, but generally it's really good.

Can I foil over foil?

Absolutely. This technique creates real impact!

Can I use other foils with TODO?

TODO™ foils are manufactured to work specifically with TODO and they are specific heat transfer foils so you can't use 'regular' foil.

You can also use these foils on double sided tape without using heat, just simply burnish it.

Letterpressing Frequently Asked Questions - Click to view answers

Which ink is best to use with the letterpress stamps?

A permanent ink like Archival won't bobble on the metal stamps, whereas a dye-based ink does.

Which cardstock gets the best results when letterpressing?

Cotton card is the best for letterpressing if you just want the impression to be deep. Place the letterpress stamp on the TODO™ base platform and then place the C and A Plate on top of that.

When letterpressing with ink, the best results are obtained by lifting the roller dial to 7 and using a plate combo of C on the platform and A on the top.

Embossing Frequently Asked Questions - Click to view answers

Can I use any embossing folders with TODO?

Yes, although some are thicker than others so you will have to adjust the setting dial.

Can I emboss thin dies with embossed detail?

You can emboss and cut by adding your C plate to your normal cutting sandwich (between the card and the B/D plate). You will need to increase your normal cutting level by 4 increments to allow for the extra height. E.g - A thin die normally cut at a roller height of 4.5 should be increased to 8.5 after adding the C plate.

I am struggling to get an even emboss

This may be because the embossing folder can sometimes move when embossing. Try to run the embossing folder through once, adjust the position of the folder and run it back through. We have also found that having both the C & B plate over the top of the folder can improves results.
