Fabric - where on earth would we be without it? Not only does it provide crucial warmth and coverage, but it also showcases fashion trends and displays individuality. Fabric is an essential part of life - but has it always been? Without a doubt, we can answer that question with a definitive yes. Ever since ancient times, fabric has been used for survival - although fabric back then wasn't quite the same as it is now. Without the great fortune of being able to walk over to the nearest shopping centre, people living over 6000 years ago had to separate flax fibres into strands, then weave them into simple pieces of fabric themselves. Flax is commonly thought to be the oldest natural fibre - but what can we expect to find in the 21st century?
Fundamentally, fabric falls into two categories: Natural Fibres and Synthetic Fibres. Before the first synthetic fibre, Rayon, was introduced in 1910, people relied heavily on natural fibres from renewable sources like plants and animals. In the modern day, natural fibres like Cotton, Wool, and Silk are still widely favoured for use in apparel and soft furnishings due to their classic reliability and functionality, however we now have greater design options with the ever-increasing popularity of synthetic materials. Man-made fabrics were developed using the process of polymerisation to combat the imperfections that some natural fibres possess, such as wrinkling and shrinking. Today, there's a hugely popular range of synthetic materials available, such as Acrylic,Polyester and Nylon.
Fabric cuts are designed to make your fabric buying and garment-constructing experiences far easier, specially precut into convenient sizes for you. There's a vast range of differently-sized precuts available to purchase, each cut catering for specific uses in projects. From larger Mini Bolts and Fat Quarters to smaller Jelly Rolls and Charm Packs, there's undeniably a fantastic selection to choose from. To clarify the best qualities of common fabric precuts,as well as to educate you further on the types of material on the market, we've put together a little Fabric Buying Guide to help you out.
