How to Choose a Sewing Machine

Whether you're new to sewing or a seasoned stitcher, investing in a Sewing Machine is a momentous occasion! But what is a sewing machine, and how does it work? The basic ideology behind a sewing machine is stitching two or more pieces of fabric together using thread and a needle. They decrease the amount of manual sewing in creating a garment, ultimately sewing quicker, more accurately and more consistently.

The most important thing to consider when choosing a sewing machine is what you personally need in one. Before rushing into your decision, you should think about these things:

1. What's your skill level?

Beginners will need a variety of basic stitches and easy functions, while experienced sewers may need more complex features to make a larger variety of projects. Make sure you don't splash the cash on a machine too advanced or too basic for your skill set.

2. What you will use the machine for?

It's important to really think about why you're buying a sewing machine. There's no use buying a machine with hundreds of quilting features when you're interested in dressmaking, or similarly you won't want a machine with basic clothing repair stitches if you're looking to upholster furniture.

3. How often will you use it?

If you believe that you'll rarely use your sewing machine, there's no use buying one with hundreds of stitches, features and accessories that you'll never use. In addition, if you know that you'll be using it very frequently it's important that you buy a strong machine with a sturdy and durable frame.

4. Where will you use it?

You should consider where you'll use your sewing machine and whether you'll need to easily transport it to another location. This may seem like a minor point to consider, however you won't want to haul around a heavy machine if you'll be moving around frequently – it's crucial that your machine is personalised to each of your individual needs!
