If you want to create the most intricate details in your papercraft projects, there's no better way to precisely cut out designs than by using dies. We stock an enormous range of dies, from renowned brands like Tattered Lace, Spellbinders, Tonic Studios and Couture.
Die-cutting has a long, diverse history, originally introduced to the world with very different intensions than its popular craft use today. Invented in the mid-1800s, die-cutting was a solution to the labour-intensive process of cutting leather for shoes. The debut of die-cutting meant that shoemakers could create templates for soles to accurately reproduce using die-cutting machines, and voilá! Mass production was born! Die-cutting has been significantly developed and improved since the 19th century - the advancement of technology has allowed for greater applications across many industries, most relevantly in crafting. Now, die-cutting can be accomplished at home using considerably smaller machines, enabling you to cut out intricate designs using small, thin metal dies.
The first patented hand-operated die-cutting machine was the Ellison LetterMachine, manufactured in 1977. Dies at that time were blocks made of wood with steel rules on one side and rubber on the other. These large, chunky dies were exceptionally innovative at the time, however the cutting shapes were far more basic in comparison to what's available to crafters today. Now, dies are predominantly made of wafer-thin metal and depict complex patterns, designs and sentiments, allowing far more intricacy in crafting. Nowadays, big-name brands like Tattered Lace, Spellbinders, and Tonic Studios dominate the die-cutting world, providing a range of sizes and styles, featuring anything from floral and animal themes to geometric shapes and occasion-inspired designs.
Die-cutting is a simple technique when you have experience doing it - but what if you've never used a die-cutting machine in your life? If you're thinking about buying your first die-cutting machine, you've come to the right place! Although we can't make the decision for you, we've put together a Papercraft Machine Buying Guide in which we take a page to focus specifically on die-cutting, looking at the differences between manual, electronic and computerised machines, as well as what else you'll need to purchase alongside one. Alternatively, check out our Beginner's Guide to Die-Cutting for an extensive technique walk-through!
